Stonehurst is a development in
Freehold Township. It's defined as the area located on the west
side of Route 9. The southern end of Stonehurst is the area
north of Elton Adelphia Road, the northern border is Schanck Rd.
The western end of Stonehurst is Stillwells Corner Rd. At any
given time there is a good supply of houses for sale in
Stonehurst.
West of Stillwells Corner Rd
are some other developments, such as Stonehurst West, Monmouth
Heights, Woodcrest, Contempra, and north of Schanck Rd is a
small development sometimes known as Sunnybrook or
Whittier Oaks, but which actually has no name. There is a small
development within Stonehurst called Woodgate with 21 homes, and
another development, Sleepy Hollow, is on the southeastern
corner of Stonehurst. These are often considered to be part of
Stonehurst. There is also a condo complex called Stonehurst with
almost 500 condos or townhouses.
Stonehurst has +- 580 single
family homes. The homes were built in the 1960's. Zoning is
R-25, which requires a minimum of 25,000 sq ft of land, which is
about .57 acre. Some homes have well over 1 acre.
When Stonehurst was built, the
township required the developer to provide a school. Most
elementary school children will attend Laura Donovan
School, which is the school located in Stonehurst. Children
grades 6-8 will attend Clifton T Barkalow school on Stillwells
Corner Rd and high school children will attend the Freehold
Regional High School District.
The
Freehold Regional High School District consists of 6 high
schools - Manalapan, Marlboro, Freehold Township, Freehold,
Howell and Colts Neck. Children usually attend the closest high
school - Stonehurst students will attend Freehold Township
High School.
Each
of the six high schools has a specialized Learning Centers for
students who are highly motivated and talented. All students
from the region are eligible for enrollment, admission is
competitive. The curriculums at the Specialized Learning Centers
are:

issues, animal and botanical sciences academy
Marlboro - business administration
Howell - humanities, fine and performing arts academy
Freehold - medical sciences, culinary arts/hospitality
management academy and a computer science academy
Manalapan - science and engineering, automotive technology and
law enforcement and public safety academies Colts
Neck - law and public service, a Navy JROTC character and
leadership development academy
At
all of the high schools, SAT scores consistently exceed state
and national averages, and more than 87 percent of the
district's students pursue higher education.
For commuters to NYC, NJ
Transit has a bus Route # 139 which runs right through
Stonehurst.
